Baccarat rules: how the game works

Baccarat is one of the simplest casino card games: you make no decisions about the cards during a round, only where to place your bet. Two hands are dealt, Player and Banker, and the one closer to nine wins. This guide covers the rules of baccarat, card values, the third-card rules and why the Banker bet is mathematically the best choice.

The names can mislead. Player and Banker are simply the names of the two hands; you can bet on either, and you never have to act as the bank.

Bets and payouts

If the round ends in a tie, Player and Banker bets are returned. Many games add side bets such as pairs, whose rules and payouts vary from game to game.

Card values

Aces count 1, cards 2–9 their face value, and tens and picture cards 0. A hand's value is the last digit of its total: 7 and 8 make 15, so the hand is worth 5. King and nine is 9, the best possible hand. A hand can never go above nine, so there is no busting as in blackjack.

How a round plays out

Each hand gets two cards. If either hand has 8 or 9 on two cards, it is a natural and no more cards are drawn. Otherwise the third-card rules decide whether the Player hand and then the Banker hand take one more card. The rules are fixed and applied automatically by the dealer or the software.

Third-card rules

Player draws on 0–5 and stands on 6 or 7. If Player stood, Banker follows the same rule. If Player drew a third card, Banker acts on its own total and Player's third card:

House edge and the 5% commission

In an eight-deck game Banker wins about 45.9% of rounds, Player about 44.6% and ties about 9.5%. Because Banker wins more often, a 5% commission is taken from Banker wins. Even so, Banker remains the cheapest bet with a house edge of about 1.06%, against about 1.24% for Player. The Tie bet tempts with its high payout, but its edge is about 14.4% at 8:1 and about 4.8% at 9:1. Some games drop the commission and instead pay, for example, a Banker win on six at half; the edge does not vanish, it simply moves to another rule.

Online and live baccarat

Baccarat suits online play well: there are no card decisions and rounds are short. In live baccarat a real dealer deals in a studio, with classic tables alongside faster and special-rule versions whose payouts can differ, so check the game help first. Scoreboards of past results are just history and do not predict the next hand.

Frequently asked questions

What are the basic rules of baccarat?

You bet on the Player hand, the Banker hand or a tie. Both hands receive two or three cards under fixed rules, and the hand closer to nine wins.

Why is commission charged on Banker bets?

The Banker hand wins slightly more often because it is played last. A 5% commission normally balances that advantage.

Which baccarat bet is best?

Banker, with a house edge of about 1.06%. Player is about 1.24%, and Tie is much higher.

Can scoreboards predict the next hand?

No. They only show past results, which have no effect on the next round.
